Gary Welmer: Gary played softball in Columbus from 1972 to 1987. He played for
Pickett’s and the Columbus Bar teams. He was an excellent player who won
several league and tournament championships. He was named to several all-
tournament teams. Gary was very athletic and extremely competitive. He was an
excellent pitcher who could field the middle with the best. He wanted the ball hit
to him! At the plate “Chopper” had great power and was an excellent line drive
hitter with a ferocious swing. He was a hard-nosed player who always expected to
win, and he usually did just that. Gary was one of the reasons the great Pickett’s
teams became so revered and successful.
